Group Rides 101

Our Group Riding Standard
At The Harley District, the spirit of the open road is matched by our commitment to safety and camaraderie. Our rides are a cornerstone of the THD experience, and we follow a straightforward philosophy to ensure every journey is fun, coordinated, and secure.
Our Ride Leadership
Every THD group ride is expertly led by a Road Captain (RC), mirroring the best practices of the H.O.G. guidelines. The RC is the facilitator, coordinating the route and setting the pace, while the Rear RC (Sweep) acts as our safety anchor, looking out for the welfare of every rider and managing any issues or breakdowns. We ride as a cohesive unit.
Our Simple Code for the Road
Our guidelines aren't just rules—they're commitments to each other. While the ultimate responsibility for your safety rests with you, following these points ensures a great experience for the entire THD community:
Integrity First: To ensure absolute focus and safety on the road, all THD rides are strictly alcohol-free.
Ready to Roll: Please arrive 30 minutes prior to departure with your tank full and your machine in perfect running order.
The Briefing: Always attend the pre-ride meeting. This is where the RC shares the route, planned stops, hand signals, and essential logistics. It's vital for a smooth ride.
Connecting the Community: For the protection and participation of everyone, all riders must sign the necessary Chapter Event Release Form and sign-in on the Ride Attendance Sheet before we kickstands up.
New to Group Riding? If you're new to THD or group riding, please let the RC know! We encourage communication and may position you near the sweep to help you get comfortable with the group pace.

Riding Formation:
At The Harley District, we ride as one, and our formation is designed to maximize safety and visibility for every rider.
Unless the Road Captain directs otherwise, all THD group rides utilize the staggered riding formation. This simple technique gives every rider maximum space and time to react.
Lane Positioning: The Road Captain will take the lead in the left third of the lane.
Following the Leader: The second rider should position themselves in the right third of the lane, maintaining at least a one-second gap behind the lead bike. The rest of the group follows this pattern (left third, right third, left third, etc.).
Key Rule: Always stay in line with the bike directly in front of you. Maintain your lane position and never cross over the lane line.
Filling Gaps: If a large gap opens up, wait for the rider next to you (the staggered motorcyclist) to safely wave you forward to close the formation.
Riding staggered is a core part of the THD experience, ensuring we all enjoy the open road safely together.

Changing Lanes as a Group:
When it's time to change lanes or pass, The Harley District moves together, safely and efficiently. This coordinated action is key to keeping our group intact:
The Signal: The Lead Road Captain (RC) initiates the signal for the lane change.
The Sweep Secures: The Rear RC (Sweep) immediately moves into the desired lane (e.g., the left lane) and holds their position, blocking any traffic that might interfere.
The Advance: As the path clears, riders move one at a time, from the back of the group to the front, transitioning into the new lane and resuming their staggered formation.
Passing: Once the entire group is safely in the new lane, you can proceed to pass the slower vehicle as a unit.
Returning: After clearing the slow vehicle by a safe distance, the Lead RC moves back into the original lane (e.g., the right lane).
Following Suit: The rest of the riders follow, moving back into the original lane one at a time after safely passing the vehicle.
This "back-to-front" maneuver for changing lanes ensures safety and keeps The Harley District riding smoothly together.

Passing on a Two Lane Raod:
Passing on a Two Lane Raod:
Navigating two-lane roads requires caution, and preserving the safety of The Harley District group is our highest priority.
Priority: On two-lane roads, especially during local runs, the group will generally not attempt to pass slower traffic unless the vehicle is traveling significantly under the speed limit.
The RC's Call: If the Lead Road Captain (RC) decides the situation warrants a pass, they will initiate the maneuver.
Your Decision: Once the RC signals the pass, every rider must make their own independent decision regarding safety. DO NOT simply follow the bike ahead of you unless you are absolutely certain the lane is clear for you to complete the pass safely.
Post-Pass: After successfully passing, increase your speed slightly to create a safe buffer, making room for the entire group to follow and rejoin the formation.
Regrouping: If the group becomes separated during the process, do not panic. Simply pull over at the next safe location to allow the group to regroup.
In The Harley District, we trust our riders to prioritize their own safety above all else.

Stopping as a Group at an Intersection:
Stopping as a Group at an Intersection:
When The Harley District comes to a stop at an intersection, we briefly modify our formation to ensure we clear the light quickly and as a unified group:
Closing the Gap: As we stop, riders should momentarily break the staggered formation and pull up side-by-side with the rider next to them. This cuts the physical length of the group by half.
Clearing the Intersection: Staying side-by-side until we are fully through the intersection minimizes the time needed to clear the light, significantly increasing our chances of staying together.
Safety First Rule: If the light changes and you cannot cross safely, you must STOP. Never risk running a red light to stay with the group.
Regrouping: The Lead Road Captain (RC) will immediately slow down to allow riders who were stopped to safely catch up. If necessary, the Rear RC (Sweep) will safely lead the separated riders until the entire District is back together.
We prioritize safety and cohesion, ensuring every rider gets through the intersection legally and securely.

Group Parking:
Efficient parking is the final step in a successful ride with The Harley District. Our goal is to quickly and safely get every rider off the road and out of traffic flow.
Swift Exit: We emphasize an orderly parking method to reduce the risk of injury for the last riders who might otherwise be blocking traffic while waiting for the group.
The THD Method: For fast and clean parking, each rider should pull slightly past their intended spot and then back their bike up into the space. This maneuver is quick because it eliminates waiting for the rider in front of you to finish backing in.
Bagger Caution: Bagger riders, remember your exhaust pipes! Take extra care when backing up to a curb. Ensure you have clearance before deploying your side stand, as leaning the bike over can easily cause you to bend or scratch your left pipe on the curb.
We always finish strong by parking smart and protecting our machines.

Group Riding Hand Signals:
When the lead RC displays a hand signal it is up to everyone in the group to pass it back to the riders behind them. This can be relayed by the rider and/or their passenger.
The following hand signals will not always be used with every group ride, but you are encouraged to be familiar with them. Hand signals used are at the discretion of the lead RC.
Group Handling Signals

Raise your left arm horizontal with your elbow fully extended.

Right Turn
Raise your left arm horizontal with your elbow bent 90 degrees vertically
